Gabriel Yared Lebanese composer honoured with Lifetime Achievement Award at DIFF

Listen to the soundtrack for ‘The English Patient’ and you’ll instantly appreciate why the French-Lebanese composer Gabriel Yared was the recipient of the Arab Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s Dubai International Film Festival.
The composition is stirring, mesmerizing and evocative and justifiably worthy of its Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe and Grammy Award.
With more than 100 original scores to his name, this self-taught musician was also the musical inspiration behind the scores for ‘The Talented Mr. Ripley’ (1999) and ‘Cold Mountain’ (2003).
Yet, the internationally acclaimed composer, appeared humble when he arrived on the red carpet to receive his award on the opening night of the Festival.
“It’s very special for me because I am Lebanese and it’s the first time in my life that I’ve been honoured by an Arab country for the Arab world – so I’m back to my origins,” he said. “DIFF represents many parts of the world, but mostly it’s good that the Arab cinema is also represented here and Lebanese cinema, which is very creative. I look forward to Lebanese directors to blossom somewhere else outside of Lebanon because it’s very difficult.”
